FAIR TRADE

Fair Trade Certification

Fair trade certification (Fair trade, known as Fair Trade Certified in the United States and Canada) is a product certification system designed to allow people to identify products that meet agreed environmental, labour and developmental standards. Overseen by a standard-setting body, FLO International, and a certification body, FLO-CERT, the system involves independent auditing of producers to ensure the agreed standards are met. Companies offering products that meet the Fair trade standards may apply for licenses to use the Fair trade Certification Mark (or, in North America, the applicable Fair Trade Certified Mark) for products including bananas, honey, oranges, cocoa, coffee, shortbread, cotton, dried and fresh fruits and vegetables, juices, nuts and oil seeds, quinoa, rice, spices, sugar, tea and wine, Beauty products, Cut Flowers, Ornamental Plants and Sports Balls etc. FLO-CERT ensures that both producers and traders comply with the FLO International Fair trade Standards and that producers invest the benefits received through Fairtrade in their development. Fair-trade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fair-trade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers.
