SA8000 sets out provisions for issues such as trade union rights, the use of child labor, working hours, health and safety at work, and fair pay."SA8000, or Social Accountability 8000, is a global applied management system for companies seeking to guarantee the basic rights of their workers. SA8000 provides a voluntary workplace certification and is mainly used by Western companies ensuring their whole supply chain operates on a minimum of social standards. It is one of the world's first auditable social certification. It is based on conventions of the ILO, UN and national law, and spans industry and corporate codes to create a common language to measure social compliance. SAAS stands for Social Accountability Accreditation Services (SAAS) which is an Accreditation Agency which was founded to provide Accreditation and monitor Organisations as Certifiers of Social Standards who comply with the requirements of SA 8000. SAAS was started as a department within SAI, which stands for Social Accountability International, in 1997, and was established as a non-profit organisation ten years later in 2007.
