ISO / TS 16949: 2002

Automotive Production Quality Management System

The ISO/TS 16949:2009 standard (previously known as ISO/TS 16949:2002) is a worldwide standard developed by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF), a group of the world’s leading manufacturers and trade organizations. ISO/TS 16949:2009, in conjunction with ISO 9001:2008, defines the quality management system requirements for the design and development, production and, when relevant, installation and service of automotive-related products. The ISO/TS 16949 standard defines manufacturing as the process of making or fabricating production materials, production or service parts, assemblies or heat treating, welding and painting. Automotive is understood to include Passenger Cars, Light Commercial Vehicles, Heavy Trucks, Buses, Motorcycles; but exclude Industrial, Agricultural and Off-Highway (Mining, Forestry, Construction) vehicles. The 2002 version has adopted the content and structure of ISO 9001 certification: 2008, which promotes a "Process Approach" to develop, implement and improve a quality management system. ISO/TS 16949 fosters improved product & process quality, incorporates the best lessons learnt from the global automotive realm, provides additional confidence for global sourcing, ensures a global quality system approach in the supply chain for supplier/subcontractor service consistency reduces variation, waste and improves the overall efficiency in production levels and also eliminates the need for multiple third party registrations.
